Haulmont develops Education Portal for the Higher School of Economics

The Higher School of Economics (HSE) is a public research university and rated in the top three of all Russian universities. Located in four cities including Moscow and St Petersburg, HSE currently employs 7,000 teaching staff with 47,500 students enrolled.

HSE commissioned Haulmont to develop an Education Portal with the aim of enabling;

  • Individual user accounts for students and staff to access relevant information, university announcements and services
  • Access to partner programmes in place with other universities
  • Promotion and sale of educational content and relevant courses

Haulmont’s experience in developing the Russian Ministry of Health staff training portal was a key factor in HSE’s decision to work with the company.

  • Haulmont’s custom solutions team developed a portal for HSE using the company’s own Jmix (formerly CUBA) platform, a Java-based framework designed for rapid development and customisation. The flexibility of Jmix meant that HSE could request additional features ‘on the fly’ and the development team could respond quickly to changing needs and requirements; project scoping began in January 2020 with the need for the portal to be ready to use in the new academic year, the following September.

HSE’s stakeholders briefed Haulmont on portal functions, content requirements and collaborated on data visualisation/display options. Haulmont’s team developed functionality based on user rights; both teaching staff and students alike can log-in, review their schedules and access the university’s Learning Management System (LMS). Additional pathways are user-dependent, so for example, students can request consultations with teaching staff within the portal and the teaching staff can view student requests and approve their consultation appointments accordingly. The various functions available required integrations with other university services such as the LMS and Jira ServiceDesk (where a user can report any technical issues with the portal to the support team).

Access to partner programmes and online educational content

  • HSE is partnered with a number of other universities to offer its courses. Students can access HSE courses through the portal’s online learning platform. Partner universities have their own portal accounts which they can use to access courses and learning resources, facilitating remote cross-learning and making it easier to review grades and other statistics across organisations.
    Additionally, the portal serves as a marketplace in which users can browse available faculties and programmes before purchasing content.

The Education Portal has become the single point of access to learning resources and more than 60 HSE university services.

There are now over 80,000 users of the portal and LMS including students, teaching staff, administration and students from partner universities. The solution was awarded the Magic People Awards 2020 ‘Digital Transformation of the Year’ - a highly prestigious award in Russia.

“Haulmont’s development and implementation process allowed us to take various portal iterations to user groups for testing, making continuous iterations and improvements to functionality throughout. As a result, the portal was launched on time and met all project requirements,” noted Alexander Zimovets, Head of HSE’s Education Digitisation Department.
